The Santalum album L. tree (sandalwood) is an indigenous species in East India, Malaysia. Up to 10 meters tall tree that blooms all year round and is not picky as to the space in which it will grow. Its wood can smell even more intense if it grows in as dry and desolate places as possible. The large leathery leaves resemble a bay leaf. At the tops of the branches are clusters of flowers, mostly four-leafed and odorless. When they bloom, they are yellow in color and then gradually become intensely red. Sandalwood is traditionally used for perfumes, incense and jewelry, furniture, and in India it has been used for centuries as a traditional Ayurvedic medicine because of its exceptional effects. The sandalwood tree is found in one of the oldest Vedic writings of Hinduism, Nirukti. It was considered a divine tree used to carve and build temples, idols, religious statues, and spiritual tools; which are known to remain fragrant for decades or longer.

What is mala? How do we use mala?

Mala necklaces can be made of wooden beads, seeds, semi-precious or precious stones or gems. The mala one consists of 108 balls. The number 108 is a sacred number in many cultures, especially in the Hindu tradition. The number comes from the multiplication of 12 "astrological houses" on 9 planets. Every mala also has a Guru ball or tassels, which remind us of the teachers in our lives.

We traditionally hold the mala between the thumb and middle finger and so each ball passes through the finger and thumb. In doing so, the mantra is recited either quietly or aloud. The strongest mantras should be those that are quietly repeated in the mind. We do this until we reach the Guru's ball or fringe, turn the mala over and the process continues until we reach the Guru's ball or fringe again. Repeating the mantra in this way is a great way to calm the mind and keep the thoughts in our daily lives (whatever this applies to each of us, regardless of culture or religion).

The power of mala necklace cannot be denied. We can quickly notice its positive effects. Try to find your mala that will remove your worries. We all know stress, restlessness and fear - but with a suitably mala necklace you will always be able to have a little security and in a beautiful shape!
