How do we use yoga accessories?

Nowadays, the practice of yoga is becoming an irreplaceable form of relaxation, stretching and strengthening the body, calming the mind and spirit. In addition to traditional, original yoga styles (hatha, iyengar, ashtanga), many new yoga styles have been developed and shaped due to the diversity of individuals needs. Regardless of age, physical abilities and possible limitations (health, physical…), everyone can choose the most appropriate and favorite style of yoga for him. Many styles / types of yoga use accesories that provide a safer journey to asanas, support in asanas where we stay longer, create more space and stability, and bring a more fun element to the exercise itself.

In traditional yoga styles such as hatha, iyengar, vinyasa, ashtanga are most often used:

yoga straps, which serve as an extension of the limbs in poses like Gomukhasana, Natarajasana, Paschimottanasana… to safely enter the pose, hold it properly, while maintaining comfort and ease. The straps are durable, made of cotton fabric, with a buckle on one side, and vary in thickness and length. Tightening that is too tight can increase tension in the shoulder and neck areas. Regardless of the asana, be sure to maintain a soft grip on the belt.

the blocks, which are used to deepen the stretching, for stability and proper alignment of the asanas, they bring the limbs closer in the asanas of Utthita Trikonasana, Uttanasana… they serve as a support in the sitting positions of Lotus, Virasana, Eka pada Rakapotasana... for thighs and hips that are less flexible, deepen the opening of the chest in the asanas of Supta Virasana, Matsyasana, Setubandhasana. There are blocks of foam, cork, wood, mostly all are universal dimensions (10x15x23 cm). You can adjust them to three different heights according to the asana you perform - the longest height, the shortest and the flat.

Yoga blanket is irreplaceable for the asana savasana - the position of the dead, when we lie on the ground, and makes us feel warm and comfortable. The blanket can provide great support and comfort in other asanas as well - from basic (sitting support) to advanced (upright, headstand). The blanket can be bent and allows the legs to relax and support the lower back or can be used as a knee pad. Its advantage is the adjustment of height and shape.

For yoga styles such as restorative / therapeutic yoga, yin yoga, kundalini yoga, yoga for pregnant women, where asanas are held for a long time, in addition to the above, bolsters are also used. Bolsters are stuffed pillows of rectangular or cylindrical shape that help you completely relax in asanas, help soften the body and allow gradual and safe stretching. Different sizes and weights are available, and they are filled with different materials - cotton, kapuk wool, spelled flakes, buckwheat flakes... Examples of asanas in which we use bolster: Savasana, Balasana, Viparita karani, Supta Baddha Konasana…

The yoga roller (wheel) is a relatively new device that has been put into practice by yogi Dharma Mittra. The main purpose of the roller is to improve the flexibility of the back and to open the front part of the body - it stretches and easily opens the chest, shoulders, back and hips. It also brings more dynamism into practice. Some examples of asanas in which you can use a roller: Hanumanasana, Pincha Mayurasana, Salamba Sarvangasana, Halasana.

The meditation pillow fully supports you in meditative positions such as sukhasana, virasana, padmasana. The pillows allow the feet and knees a relaxed and comfortable position, while straightening the back and bringing the pelvis forward, providing support to it. Pillows come in a variety of shapes, sizes and fillings. We can choose pillows in the shape of a crescent, moon, square, rectangular, zafu-round, with rice or buckwheat flakes, kapok wool ... We choose the one that best supports us.

Eye pads increase the relaxing effect in restorative asanas such as savasana or in meditation. They are usually stuffed with flax seeds and / or with the addition of herbs (e.g. lavender), and you can also add essential oils to them for the added benefit of aromatherapy; e.g. lavender relaxes and calms the nerves, eliminates insomnia and reduces depression. For aerial yoga, a hammock is used, an aid similar to a hanging net which is used to help to perform the asanas, which is attached to the ceiling.
